How AI really works
Clearly reviewed, it becomes much clearer that, a better name for AI, should have been “Learned Intelligence”. I mean, it all depends on how “intelligence” is defined. To prove this line of thinking, let us review and and take a look at how AI really works.
Is AI really “Artificial” Intelligence or “learned” intelligence?
If you ask and speak to many people, they will most likely tell you that AI, is very intelligent. In fact, the marketing buzzword and name, “AI” (Artificial Intelligence) bothers much on a misnomer; perhaps, misleading.
Clearly reviewed, it becomes much clearer that, a better name for AI, should have been “Learned Intelligence”. I mean, it all depends on how “intelligence” is defined. To prove this line of thinking, let us review and and take a look at how AI really works.
Learning from examples:
All AI models have one thing in common, they all learn from examples. So, imagine you have a very smart friend who spends all his time, reading and studying just about everything. He asks you and other friends tons and tons of questions. From these series of questions, he learns a lot. He\She then moves to another city where people ask him\her questions about the same topics he\she learned from all of you combined. The fold in this new town, view him as extremely “intelligent”. The picture I just painted here is clearly how AI works. Computer regurgitate what they learned from training.
Patterns and Rules:
Still using your smart friend as an example, while asking you and your other friends those endless questions, he\she notices patterns in the questions and answers. He\She easily strings these patterns together and when giving answers to the people in the new town these patterns are then used to answer those questions in in different way. For instance, if while answering questions or training the model you and all your friends show pictures of humans with 4 legs,; assuming your smart friend had never seen a human with 2 legs, he\she would also tell the people in the new city that humans have 4 legs.
As you can see from this simple example, AI can at best be defined as that your “friend” who learns from examples, notices patterns in answers and questions. Then when asked about those things he or she learned, gives the answers using their own words.
In this simple analogy, you can easily notice that a better name for AI should have been “Learned intelligence”; problem is, such a name would not be highly marketable; so, we call it and use a more marketable one, “Artificial Intelligence”.
